Enviromental Studies & Permitting
Quite a few environmental and social issues need to be addressed in the siting of a wind power facility, which is why federal, state, and local authorities impose certain environmental and permit requirements.
Wind farms make great neighbors, but it’s the obligation of the developer to ensure that a project proceeds in a fashion acceptable to the regulators and the local community. This includes conducting environmental studies such as avian, biological resources, and wetland. High raptor activity in the area, endangered or protected species that could be jeopardized, and noise or aesthetic issues for the local community are all subjects to be considered.
Thought should also be given to whether the turbines will obstruct the flight path or local air traffic. This is why developers must also acquire certain permits, which may include a Federal Aviation and Administration (FAA) permit and a Public Utilities Commission (PUC) permit, depending on the state.
